Aleksandar “Alex” Popovich, age 59, of Cedar Key, Florida, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Chiefland, Florida.
Born in Australia, he moved to the United States in 1969 and lived in Ohio for almost 35 years before moving to Florida in 2015.
He worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation for 30 years, retiring as the transportation manager in 2012 where he kept all vital equipment operational.
A firearm enthusiast, he belonged to several gun clubs and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Alex enjoyed hunting, walking, and the outdoors. When it came to his passion of machinery and mechanics, he was very talented and skilled in fixing and building just about anything.
Surviving is his companion of 25 years, Brenda Hamrick and her children, Wendy (Jason) Green and Isaac Gibson (Dez Wetzel); brothers, Dragoljub Popovich and Miodrag (Jane) Popovich; nieces, Tanja Popovich, Natasha Hobson and Allie Popovich; nephew, Marko (Kelly) Popovich, as well as 3 great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, The Very Reverend Zivko and Zora (nee Janushevich) Popovich.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at St. Mark Serbian Orthodox Monastery, 1434 Lake Breeze Road, Sheffield Village, Ohio. The Very Rev. Dragan Goronjic will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mark Cemetery, Sheffield Village.
