Steve D. Vancs, age 84 of Lorain, passed away Friday, December 26, 2014 at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
Born October 26, 1930 in Lorain, he lived in Lorain his entire life. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1948.
Steve retired in 1990 for Ford Motor Company Lorain Assembly Plant after 30 years there.
He was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain. Steve was also a member of the Lorain Bowler's Association Board of Directors since 1973 and served as President in 1978.
An avid and accomplished bowler, Steve was inducted into the Lorain Bowler's Association Hall of Fame in 1985. He was the Lorain Bowler's Association Actual Champ in 1961, 1963, 1974, 1977 and 1983 and Actual Doubles Champ in 1985. He also was County Roll-Off Actual Team Champ in 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1979. He was a three time winner in the Lorain Bowler's Association "700" Tournament in 1975, 1980 and 1981. His composite average of 194 spanned over 20 years. Steve has bowled 13-700's, 2-289's, 1-287 and 3-279 games. He also was the winner of the Lorain Ford Singles in 1970, 1972 and 1973.
Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (nee Mazurek); sons, Steve of Elyria and Dan (Lisa) of Avon; daughters, Terese Simpkins, Beth (Richard) Santana, Jane Rieke and Stefani Vancs all of Lorain; grandchildren, Derek Fuller, Dana Reyes, Elba Santana, Danielle Dick, Breanna Rieke, Zachary Rieke, Jeremy Hensley, Jenna Hensley, Josh Vancs and Lily Vancs; 7 great grandchildren; his brothers, John of Huron and Traian of Newark, Ohio; and sisters, Sophie "Ann" Klanchar and Valeria Slack both of Amherst.
Private services for the family were held. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
