Bienvenido Fernandez, 83 of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.
Born March 22, 1931 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, he came to Lorain in 1963.
Bienvenido worked as an assembler at the Ford Motor Company in Avon Lake for 31 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where he was a member of the Crucillo Movement. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union, and the Puerto Rican Home where he had served as president from 1971-1973. He enjoyed watching baseball, playing dominos and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are his sons, Juan Mangual of Far Rockaway, NY, Armando Acevedo of Waterbury, CT., and Carlos "Chico" Fernandez of Lorain; a daughter, Annette Harrington of Lorain; sisters, Ana Lopez of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and Eva Velez of Caguas, Puerto Rico; 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria in 2002; his son, Benito "Benny" Fernandez in 2007; a daughter, Iris Vasquez in 2003; and his parents, Nicolas and Teresa (Santana) Fernandez; brothers, Stephen and Daniel; and a sister, Isabel Perez.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9:15 am in the funeral home followed by mass at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. John Retar will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
